Scuba Shack
Skinny...
Well, we
made it through another hurricane season without a hitch - thank goodness.
But, we have been having alot of rain. But that's OK right - I mean, we
are all down here to get wet anyway! The rain has not been affecting the
visibility too much, just the tans.
Where oh where
has our little Annie gone ?
Well,
as some of you know, Annie is no longer working for us. She has
been given a great opportunity to work for a new company that is bringing in a
Casino boat to Puerto Morelos (Thanks goodness not Cozumel).
Unfortunately, not only do we lose here, but she is having to spend more
and more time over in Puerto Morelos, even though her heart will always remain
try to Cozumel. We wish her all the best of luck
!!!!!!!
The Coconut and Turtle rooms -
you'll just go nuts !!!!!!
Well, some how, some way, we
have completed our 2 newest rooms here at the Village - The Turtle and
Coconut rooms. And they are just gorgeous. They were built on
top of the existing Jungle and Guitar rooms, but are quite a bit larger.
And they have the same set up at the 3 Musicians room - only their porch is
upstairs. 'And boy is that great' according to our friend Dave
Melvin. He is staying in that room as we speak..... er, write ! But
things were a bit tense there for a while. Suzie Vogel and the gang at
Oceans Window in San Antonio, TX were to be the christening group. We
finished the rooms to about 98% just 15 minutes before they arrived.
Thanks goes to all of you who submitted name suggestions for the rooms.
Roberta's deep seeded love for turtles made that name a no brainer. But
the Coconut room came from you suggestions - so Thanks
!!!!!
Pet
Update........
Euro and Peso are doing just
fine and hanging in there. We can't even imagine that Euro was just a
little kitten a few months go. He has grown so much.... and has the best
personality. And Peso is growing up as well, much to our chagrin.
She seems to have learned the Cozumel Shuffle. Village Tan Kah - dinner or
a night on the town in the main square - Village Tan Kah. We have found
her a number of times at the restaraunts downtown. Luckily, she still
knows her way home. So, any of you animal lovers trying to think of things
to bring down, they both love their chews.
November 20
The Mexican
Revolution
The Mexican Revolution was brought on by,
among other factors, tremendous disagreement among the Mexican people over the
dictatorship of President Porfirio Diaz , who, all told, stayed in office for
thirty one years. During that span, power was concentrated in the hands of a
select few; the people had no power to express their opinions or select their
public officials. Wealth was likewise concentrated in the hands of the few, and
injustice was everywhere, in the cities and the countryside alike.
Early in the 20th Century, a new generation of young leaders arose
who wanted to participate in the political life of their country, but they were
denied the opportunity by the officials who were already entrenched in power and
who were not about to give it up. This group of young leaders believed that they
could assume their proper role in Mexican politics once President Diaz announced
publicly that Mexico was ready for democracy. Although the Mexican Constitution
called for public election and other institutions of democracy, Diaz and his
supporters used their political and economic resources to stay in power
indefinitely.
Francisco I. Madero was one of the strongest believers that President
Diaz should renounce his power and not seek re-election. Together with other
young reformers, Madero created the ''Anti-reeleccionista'' Party, which he
represented in subsequent presidential elections. Between elections, Madero
traveled throughout the country, campaigning for his ideas.
Francisco I. Madero was a firm supporter of democracy and of making
government subject to the strict limits of the law, and the success of Madero's
movement made him a threat in the eyes of President Diaz. Shortly before the
elections of 1910, Madero was apprehended in Monterrey and imprisoned in San
Luis Potosi. Learning of Diaz's re-election, Madero fled to the United States in
October of 1910. In exile, he issued the ''Plan of San Luis,'' a manifesto which
declared that the elections had been a fraud and that he would not recognize
Porfirio Diaz as the legitimate President of the Republic.
Instead, Madero made the daring move of declaring himself President
Pro-Temp until new elections could be held. Madero promised to return all land
which had been confiscated from the peasants, and he called for universal voting
rights and for a limit of one term for the president. Madero's call for an
uprising on November 20th, 1910, marked the beginning of the Mexican Revolution.
On November 14th, in Cuchillo Parado in the state of Chihuahua,
Toribio Ortega and a small group of followers took up arms. On the 18th in
Puebla, Diaz's authorities uncovered preparations for an uprising in the home of
the brothers Maximo and Aquiles Serdan, who where made to pay with their lives.
Back in Chihuahua, Madero was able to persuade Pascual Orozco and Francisco
Villa to join the revolution. Though they had no military experience, Orozco and
Villa proved to be excellent strategists, and they earned the allegiance of the
people of northern Mexico, who were particularly unhappy about the abusive
ranchers and landlords who ran the North.
In March of 1911, Emiliano Zapata led the uprising of the peasants of
Morelos to claim their rights over local land and water. At the same time, armed
revolt began in many other parts of the country. The "Maderista" troops, and the
national anger which inspired them, defeated the army of Diaz within six months.
The decisive victory of the Mexican Revolution was the capture of Ciudad Juarez,
just across the river from El Paso, by Orozco and Villa. Porfirio Diaz then
resigned as President and fled to exile in France, where he died in 1915.
November 20 is then in remembrance of Francisco I. Madero's and his
call for uprising which freed them from the political dictatorship !!!
Since Mexico considers itself a peaceful nation, instead of bringing out
the military for the parades, this holiday is celebrated by recognizing
different sports
teams.
Humane Society of
Cozumel
Taken from their website
In 1996, the Cozumel Humane Society
was founded and opened a clinic/shelter in Cozumel. It is located
behind the south cruise ship piers. They focus all of their work
towards humane animal control, through a permanent, free spay/neuter campaign,
an adoption program and humane euthanasia. To date, they
have completed over 2300 sterilization surgeries, all free of
charge. Their work is financed by donations, fund
raisers and by low cost veterinary services provided at the
clinic.
For over four years now, they have
been running a "Visiting Vet Program". The idea is to have foreign vets
share their knowledge with the young vets working at the clinic, and also to
bring donated supplies and equipment to assist in keeping our costs
low. Thanks to contributions from foreign vets all across the
Americas, they have been able to modernize their small
facility. Most of the basics are pretty much covered, but they do have
a WISH-LIST. that they send out to the vets.
In return, with the generous support of some
local businesses, they are then able to offer these vets the
following:
ˇ
FREE SCUBA DIVING
ˇ FREE
ACCOMMODATIONS
ˇ DISCOUNTS AT
SELECTED RESTAURANTS
For
non-diving veterinarians interested, there are discounts in other water
activities like SNORKELING or PARASAILING available to them. If you are not a
veterinarian, please pass this message on to veterinarians that you may
know.

Incredible
Expeditions
Here's what we got planed
for the upcoming year !
The other day, as I was returning from one of my famous shopping
sprees in Cancun, I ran into a man that I had not seen on the island
for almost 15 years. He was a dive instructor with Pamela of Blue
Angel when I first moved here to Cozumel. In talking, I found out that he
is now a course director for PADI as well as a dive shop owner in Isla
Mujeres. Needless to say, the wheels started spinning and I was able to
extract a wealth of information from my old friend. Since most, if not
all, of you have read September's article by Nelda about our incredible,
amazing, fantastic trip to snorkel with the whale sharks in Holbox, you know
exactly what was going through my mind. I have to say, swimming with the
whale sharks was one of the most amazing thing that I have done in my
life. Swimming next to these huge - and I mean huge - animals that do not
even have an ounce of fear of you. No hesitation what so ever to come near
to you and look you straight in the eye while you are swimming next to
them. But that is not all - I was also told about the Manta Rays, the Cave
of the Sleeping Sharks (which by the way, does not have any sleeping sharks
anymore), and the Bull Sharks. With this plethora of information, we are
working on the following trips that we are going to be offering to you beginning
next year:
Whale Sharks
- The whale sharks are coming in
for feedings between the island of Isla Mujeres, just north of Cancun, and Isla
Holbox, located just around the northern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula.
They are there from the middle of June through the middle of September. So
that is the time that we will be offering trips there. I have been
informed that permits for snorkeling with these magnificent animals have been
issued for operators in both Isla Mujeres and Isla Holbox. I am currently
investigating this point. A typical trip will be: departing from
Cozumel after a morning dive by about 2:00 pm. Traveling to either Isla
Mujeres or Holbox and spending the night there, early morning departure by boat
to snorkel with the whale sharks, with a possibility of seeing Manta Rays as
well if they are close, returning to Cozumel that same day. Departure
times are dependant as to where we have to go. And prices by the operators
have yet to be set. They are 'supposedly' meeting in Dec to determine what
the coming years prices will be. As soon as I have all of the information,
you will be receiving the package prices. These days could possibly be
added on to the end of a trip with a departure out of the Cancun airport instead
of Cozumel. Most of the major carriers (OK, Continental and American) will
allow this. The charter flights do not, but there are more charter flights
out of Cancun than out of Cozumel. This is a snorkel trip only - no
diving. The difference between going to Isla Mujeres and Isla Holbox and
significant. It does take a lot longer to got to Holbox (all 87 speed
bumps - remember - HA! HA!). But, departing from Holbox means that you
will also be experiencing the dolphins and the flocks of flamingos that inhabit
the island. It is quite special. Groups are going to be organized
preferably during the week - for Mon - Fri snorkel tours. The reason is
that there were many people flocking from the Mayan Riviera, Cozumel, Cancun and
Merida during their weekends off to experience these majestic animals. So,
we would prefer to go during the week when there will be less boats and people
to contend with. 2004 will only be the second year that these trips are
being conducted, and huge increase in tourism is expected. So keep your
eyes peeled for more info.
Manta Rays - While investigating these opportunities with
the whale sharks, I have found out the Manta Rays are coming into Isla Mujeres
during the month of May. So, we are going to be adding on Manta Ray
Expeditions as well during that month for anyone who is interested.
Nortes, the Northeast side and Bull
Sharks- Ever been blown out by one of
our norte fronts - those cold winds that are blowing in from
Texas, so strong that the port captain decides that we are not going to be
diving?? Well, we now have options !!!!!!! 2 as a matter of
fact. If you don't know it yet, you will shortly - our loveable Land
Rover. With this vehicle and some jeeps, we are now able to take divers on
an expedition to the north east side of Cozumel island for some beach
diving. It is really lots of fun - we can even organize the cook
out. In addition to this, I have just found out that while we are
suffering from the nortes, the bull sharks are coming up the sandy flats in
Playa del Carmen. The only problem with that is that we would have to
cross over on the ferry.
As always, Spotted Eagle Rays in the
north - to the north of downtown, off of the
Cantarell wall, the Spotted Eagle Rays are schooling. This is only from
about mid to the end of Dec, to about the beginning on February. You can
see schools and schools of them - I think Doris told me that she say 17 in 1
school - 34 in total on that dive. But this dive is NOT for
everyone. The current is stronger than anything that you have experienced
on the south side of the island. And you just go to the bottom and wait
for them to come by.
So that's it guys. We have so much diving going on, I
think you will need to come and visit us at least 3 or more times a year
!!!!!!!!!!
Kids / CHRISTMAS / Cozumel
Yes, it's that
time of the year !
With the holiday season just around the corner, things are coming in
full swing here in Cozumel. The fresh Christmas trees, yes, you heard me,
fresh, are already for sale at Chedraui. I am not sure how fresh they will
be by Dec. 25, but that's besides the point. It is the time of
giving. And since last month we wrote about the Chrysalis group, is it
only appropriate that we mention all the work the takes place here in Cozumel
around Christmas time. There are many organizations that help with
underprivileged kids on the island. Chrysalis is a private organization,
DIF is the government organization for the protection and help of women and
children, as well as private orphanages - Angels __________. One of them
is actually located around the block from Roberta's house. And just like
in the states, Christmas is a very special time for children. All of
the organizations organize Christmas gift donations for the kids. So,
if any of you who are coming in the next weeks before Christmas would like to
bring a special present for a child here in Cozumel, I will personally make
sure that it gets to these organizations for the kids.
