BASIC STANDARDS FOR PADI PROFESSIONALS
Divemasters
The Divemaster (DM) rating is the first membership level in PADI. This rating denotes an individual who:
- Has a high level of personal diving skill.
- Has instructor-level knowledge of diving theory.
- Has a significant amount of training in how to assist an instructor during training activities.
- Is able to assume a role of responsibility for the welfare of other divers in his charge.
Divemasters are authorized to act as certified assistants to a PADI Teaching status Instructor; independently conduct Environmental Orientation Dives and generally supervise nontraining-related activities (by planning, organizing and directing dives).
Open Water Scuba Instructor
The Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) rating is awarded to individuals who have completed training to qualify as PADI Instructors. Open Water Scuba Instructors receive training in PADI standards, procedures, philosophies and teaching methods. They are evaluated in various areas, which include practical teaching ability, watermanship, diving knowledge, attitude and professionalism.
PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors are authorized to conduct the entire range of PADI programs from Discover Scuba Diving & Bubblemakers through Divemaster(except for specialties, which require specific Specialty Instructor ratings).
All Divemasters must renew their DM status every year in order to be current with all the changes and updates from PADI.
